West Africa Study Circle

Publications

One of the most active areas of the society is the publication of philatelic literature, ranging from definitive handbooks on major subjects down to monographs on very specialised topics.

All literature published is made available to members of the study circle at discounted prices.

Several of the society's recent publications have received high awards at national and international competitions: "St Helena Postal Markings 1815-2000" edited by Bernard Mabbett was awarded a vermeil at Stampex 2003; "Togo Overprints on Stamps of the Gold Coast" by Peter Duggan was awarded a vermeil at Chicago 2005, and at London Stampex 2005 was awarded both a vermeil and the Albert H Harris award for the best exhibit in the literature class.

Cameo, the Circle's journal

The journal of the West Africa Study Circle has been published since 1975. During that period there have been just four editors. Cameo appears three times each year, in January, May and September. It is in A4 format, typically with over sixty pages of a wide range of articles and comment. There are sections reviewing recently published literature and auction reports. The magazine has been awarded medals at national and international philatelic competitions including in 2009 gold medals at both the American Philatelic Society Stampshow in Pittsburgh and the Autumn Stampex in London. In addition to Cameo, there is a quarterly Secretary's newsletter detailing news and meetings.
